About Me

I am a qualified and accredited Art Psychotherapist with an MA in Art Psychotherapy & BA in Fine Art.

My passion for both visual art and psychology led me to train as an Art Psychotherapist, and I am a registered member of the Irish Association of Creative Arts Therapists (IACAT).

What training and professional qualifications should an art therapist have?

Art Psychotherapists are required to complete a postgraduate training programme at the master’s level, at an accredited and approved institution. This training encompasses a specified number of supervised clinical hours and personal therapy, along with both theoretical and experiential education.

Art Psychotherapists should be registered with their professional association, which maintains and upholds the standards and ethics of the profession. In Ireland, this association is the Irish Association of Creative Arts Therapists.

Practicing Art Psychotherapists must also participate in regular supervision in line with the ethical guidelines of their professional organization.

In an Art Psychotherapy session, the therapist provides various art media such as paint, clay, collage and other materials to help the person to express and explore their emotions, develop insight and make sense of difficult life experiences.

The Art Psychotherapist holds a safe, confidential setting, and works in a non-judgemental way. Therapy sessions are generally non-directive and person-led, though therapists may offer themes or directives. It can take place in an individual or a group context.

The therapist works with the client to explore their images to reach their own personal understanding and insight. Based on the age and needs of the client, a session usually lasts between 30 and 60 minutes depending on the attention span and focus of the client. The frequency of the sessions is determined during the initial assessment. No prior art experience is necessary, and you do not have to be ‘good’ at art.
